Latent split in Russian military and political leadership

Forces close to Nikolay Patrushev and Bortnikov are disappointed by Ukraine’s invasion, as Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu was responsible for that operation. Russian armed forces sustained 6727 casualties, their General Staff claims. The official estimates by Ukraine’s defense forces are one thousand less.

Shoigu’s entourage, like Bortnikov’s group, fears Putin’s decision to place his nuclear forces on alert, as that will mean the end of Shoigu’s ambitions for presidency. At the same time, he does not want to be held  responsible for a failed operation in Ukraine, as it threatens to smooth out his influence in the Kremlin. Bortnikov also understands the implications of such step for Russia and his position in government.

The tension in the Kremlin has reached a critical point, therefore. “siloviki”, who arranges for Putin’s removal from office (a palace coup) and reduces the risk of a nuclear conflict today will be able to count on further political career in Russia.
